Honda Automated Driving By 2025
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President & CEO Takahiro Hachigo recently announced that the company is targeting the year 2025 for the introduction of vehicles with highly-automated driving capability. Honda vehicles released during the 2025 model year are expected to be equipped with SAE Level 4 or “high automation” functionality.
Automated driving (SAE) is measured in six levels of capability from zero to five. SAE Level 4 vehicles can handle all driving tasks in most driving situations. With the exception of difficult driving conditions, such as slick roads or rough terrain, these vehicles will be completely able to drive themselves.
Honda has made great stride in advancing its deployment of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies in Honda and Acura vehicles. The Honda Sensing® and AcuraWatch™ suite of features currently available in new model vehicles are the bridge to highly-automated vehicles in the future. These features include autonomous emergency braking (AEB) via the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS™), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
As Honda researchers continue to perfect vehicle automation and Honda artificial intelligence (AI), Honda test vehicles are being run on closed courses to simulate multi-lane freeway driving with the presence of traffic. Other automated driving tests include simulated urban driving utilizing vehicle camera sensors to navigate through complex driving environments. The systems not only “see” road dangers and prevent collision scenarios it is also programed to “learn” the environment and improve its ability to predict an outcome and take appropriate action.
“We will strive to achieve the technological establishment of Level 4 automated driving for personal car use by around 2025,” said Hachigo. “We are striving to provide our customers with a sense of confidence and trust by offering automated driving that will keep vehicles away from any dangerous situation and that will not make people around the vehicle feel unsafe.”
Although self-driving cars are still to come there are many new Honda vehicles equipped with Honda Sensing® technologies available now.
