Evolution of the Honda Civic Si

Although the Honda Civic Si (the initials stand for “Sport Injection”) might seem like one of the newer Honda model concepts, this model has been part of the Honda lineup since 1985. It originally debuted as the Honda Civic CRX Si and launched a heightened level of performance, driving feel and agility, enthusiasts have come to expect from the Si name. Over the last eight Civic generations, Si models have proven to be successful in Honda racing as well as with consumer markets. It has received performance advantages, exclusive exterior and interior features and maintained its real-world usability.

Honda Civic SI CRX Hatchback

The original 1985 Civic CRX SI was a sporty 2-seat coupe that was later available as a 4-seat hatchback. It was powered by a 1.5-liter SOHC inline-four engine with a 12-valve cross-flow head and used Honda’s advanced PGM-FI fuel injection system and delivered a whopping 91 horsepower.

Honda Civic CRX Si Hatchback

In 1988 Honda released a more powerful (105 hp) Civic CRX Si. It had a new 16-valve, 1.6-liter SOHC engine with multiport injection and a more aerodynamic body style. Its 4-wheel double-wishbone suspension system defined this model as well as the 1989 Civic Si Hatchback with better handling than the previous model Si. Other new features included sporty from and rear stabilizer bars, a larger-diameter exhaust system and deep bolstered sport seats.

Honda Civic CRX 2-Door Hatch

The CRX name was dropped from the Si nameplate in 1992 as the new model became available as either the Honda Si Coupe or Si Hatchback, exclusively. These new models were the first Civics to be powered by Honda’s SOHC VTEC engine, which displaced 1.6-liters and incorporated variable valve control in its single overhead camshaft layout. With a power increase of over 15-percent, these new Civic Si models were the first to deliver 125 hp.

Honda Civic Si Coupe

Honda Civic Si departed from the Honda lineup for a brief period between 1995 and 1998 but returned as a completely redesigned model in 1999. This new Honda Civic Si was released only as a coupe with high-rpm performance and a remarkable jump to 160 hp at 8000 rpm, courtesy of its 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine. Other performance innovations included high-silicon pistons and stronger connecting rods, a large-diameter throttle body, and improved intake and exhaust flow. New, structural changes to the chassis included firmer springs and stabilizer bars and a front strut-tower brace. Sports inspired features such as red-themed instruments and low-profile 15-inch tires added a new edgy attitude to the 21st Century Honda Civic Si.

Honda Civic CRX Si Hatchback

2002 marked the return of the Honda Civic Si Hatchback. Powered by a new 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine the 2001 Honda Civic Si Hatchback received a 25-percent boost in power and a 20-percent increase in torque. This powerful new Si Hatch was offered with 5-bolt wheel hubs, 16-inch wheels and an available Honda Factory Performance kit.

Honda Civic Si Coupe

The Honda Civic Si Sedan joined Si Coupe and entered the Honda lineup in 2007. These 197 hp models were the first to be powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. New Civic Si Sedan and Si Coupe models also featured unique suspension tuning, a limited-slip differential and Vehicle Stability Assist. New aggressive styling and sports inspired interior appointments set this new generation of Civic Si models apart from the crowd.

Honda Civic Si Sedan

The most recent generation of Honda Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan was introduced in 2012 with an increased 2.4-liter engine as the most powerful – 201 hp – model to date. In 2014 mid-model styling changes including new race inspired front and rear fascias as well as a rear spoiler and diffuser for the Si Coupe. 2014 Si models also bumped up to 2015 horsepower.
