Honda can add one more model to the list of those that have already earned Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ Awards. The 2016 Honda Civic Coupe recently earned this prestigious title and now joins the 2016 Civic Sedan, 2016 Accord Sedan, 2016 Accord Coupe, 2016 CR-V and 2016 Pilot as an IIHS safety award winner.

When equipped with the new Honda Sensing driver assist features, the new Honda Civic Coupe earned a top GOOD rating each of the five IIHS test modes. These included tests for frontal collisions, side impacts and roof crush protection. In 12 mph and 25 mph tests at the IIHS track, the 2016 Honda Civic Coupe successfully avoided collisions, earning a SUPERIOR rating for front crash protection from the IIHS.

“We’re proud to add the 2016 Civic Coupe to a growing family of Honda vehicles that employ our Honda Sensing technology and earn top crash safety ratings,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. “Honda Sensing and systems like it are changing the conversation around vehicle safety performance from crash protection to crash avoidance, and we will continue to expand Honda Sensing to additional models as we work toward our vision for a collision-free society.”

The Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technology uses millimeter wave radar and a monocular camera to sense and respond to detected road hazards. The system alerts the driver and takes emergency action when a potential accident is imminent. Honda Sensing features available for the new 2016 Honda Civic Coupe are:

  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keeping Assist System
  • Road Departure Mitigation

Other improved safety features on the new Honda Civic Coupe include a body structure using high-strength steel, a new front passenger safety vent airbag as well as new front and side curtain airbags. The Honda Civic Coupe is also equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control and a 4-channel anti-lock braking system to keep the driver in control, especially when driving on wet or slick roads.
